Many thanks to all my awesome friends for supporting me and to the donators, pledgers, and promoters who helped make this fund-raiser a roaring success! You guys are the best!

Baby Hat Drive day 23

I took a break from knitting yesterday to hand out care packages to the homeless at the park. There were more people than I had packages to give out, so they went pretty quick! Many of them had doggies so I was very glad I brought the treats to give out as well. Most of my time was actually spent chatting with the men and women there and playing with their dogs. It was hard to leave, especially knowing that some of them were still hungry and would be cold that night :( There is such a vast need for homeless services...I look forward to being able to do more in the future.
(Sorry, no hat pic today....my camera is acting up)

Paying it forward update

Since some of the homeless in our area have dogs, ( and from what I've heard, many who congregate at the park where I'm going Sunday do as well) I just couldn't go handing out goodies to people without bringing something along for their furry friends. So, I baked up some doggy biscuits which sis helped me package this afternoon  The recipe made 286 nickel-sized treats, cut out using a rolled up section of an empty soda can with rubber bands around it to keep it from uncurling.

3 1/2 cups oats with an extra 1/2 cup for sprinkling on rolling surface. (I put mine in a food processor for about 30 seconds til it resembled a coarse meal)
1 tbsp dried parsley or 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley
2 large eggs
1 cup peanut butter
Stir everything together. Mixture will be crumbly.
Add about 1/2 cup cold water or enough to make a cohesive dough. Roll out to 1/4" thick and cut with cookie cutter or make little balls and press them flat with the bottom of a cup.
Bake at 300 on lightly greased baking sheets for 40 - 60 minutes depending on the size. Biscuits will be dark golden brown and crisp all the way through. No refrigeration necessary as long as they're very dry and crisp
I baked the nickel-sized ones for 40 minutes. Once completely cool, store in airtight container.

Paying it forward

My computer guy's kind gesture of fixing my laptop for free inspired me to pay it forward with a little side project this month - creating holiday care packages for the homeless. Using cookie bags from my couponing stash and a few bulk items from the Dollar Tree bought with cash I got for turning in soda cans, I was able to stuff 20 bags with a day's worth of food for only $0.60 each! The plan is to meet my mom, sis and nephew on Sunday at Santa Rita park to distribute the packages. I'm so excited!
Each bag contains: Cookies, Slim Jim, pretzels and cheese dip, salted peanuts and a box of apple juice.
